Get inside the Harishchandrachi Factory

The auditorium of Musée Guimet was almost full for the avant-premiere of Paresh Mokashi's directorial debut 'Harishchandrachi Factory' with general public amongst sponsors and HE Indian Ambassador Rajan Mathai. This also marked the closing ceremony of the 6th edition of 'l'été Indien'- festival of Indian Films where 15 films from Marathi and Malayalam cinema were screened.

Given the background information from the website and that it was a period film, Harishchandrachi turned out to be a decent surprise. Through out the film, while looking at the first two years of the birth of Indian cinema through the prism of Dadasaheb phalke, there is this feel-good factor as you start sympathising with Phalke on his cinematic adventure. Vintage Bombay photos running during the opening credits, vibrant Marathi folk life of the times and some carefully chosen props and details complete the picture. Nandu Madhav shines in scenes that show the despondent side of the character. Vibhavari Deshpande as a Marathi housewife and mother is totally believable.

We wish Mr. Mokashi the best for his Oscar adventure.
