Indians & Indian Cinema honoured
Girish Kasaravalli's 'Gulabi Talkies' was screened at the 15th International Festival of Asian Cinéma and it won the Special Favourite Prix of Langues' O, sponsored by the National Institute of Oriental Languages and Civilizations.
The most recognizable Cinematic achievement awards-Oscars- had the urban Indians glued to their television sets as the 81st edition of the event unfolded. 'SlumDog Millionnaire', based on the novel Q&A by Vikas Swarup and directed by British director Danny Boyle, went on to bag 8 oscars among. A.R.Rehman won two oscars for Best Music score & song. Resul Pookutty shared his oscars with team mates Ian Tapp and Richard Pryke for Best Sound Mixing. In a moving speech, he dedicated the award to India. Protests back home about showing India in a poor light notwithstanding , the film has managed to put India under the spotlight, literally.
'Smile Pinki' - a documentary film by Megan Mylan, recounting the story of poor Pinki from Mirzapur, won the best Documentary film Oscar. Shot in Varanasi, the 39 minutes film in Hindi and Bhojpuri tells the story as Pinki, born with a cleft-lip, goes on to find her fairytale smile with the help of a social worker.
